The fruit is the size of a large orange with red-purple in colour. The pomegranate fruit husk has two coatings. One is the outer hard shell and inside has the membrane covering juicy arils. They are eaten fresh, and the juice is the source of grenadine syrup, used in flavouring liquors.
Pomegranate is a part of a number of Indian street food dishes such as bhel and dabeli. It is also famously used as a garnish in salads, oatmeal and hummus.
